3 TIPS to BEING A RESPONSIBLE INTERNET USER

As we are the first generation to grow up with internet, we make the best out of it.  However, there are some disadvantages regarding it.

As we can freely surfed it without restrictions in most sites –like age restriction or parental guidance to some-we are granted the freedom to do whatever it is that we want. This may result in an irresponsible post or status update. To prevent this from happening, here are some tips on how to responsibly handle your social media accounts:

TIP #01: THINK TWICE, THRICE BEFORE POSTING

Many people posts risqué or disturbing pictures or statuses directed to a certain individual that he/she may or may not know. It makes them the target of criticisms and hurtful jokes. One example of this are the memes. There are some inappropriate memes being posted online that shatters that particular persons’ self-esteem. Like the one who was photographed –without her consent or knowledge- sleeping in a bus, with her mouth wide open by a total stranger.

That ‘total stranger’ took it upon himself to post the unauthorized picture online and garner the attention he ‘might be’ craving. Though it comes in both positive and negative forms. He may think that it was just a harmless prank, but he unknowingly made fun of that person.

TIP # 02: DO NOT LET YOUR EMOTIONS GET THE BEST OF YOU

There are times when you had that ‘spur of the moment.’ You had a fight with your parents, you had an argument with your boyfriend/ girlfriend, you failed the exam, you and your friend of 10 years got into a misunderstanding. To tame that burning anger, hated, you result to bashing them, cursing them or revealing their embarrassing experiences ONLINE- mind you, where many people can see it, can access it. Since what we are discussing about is responsible internet handling, don’t let your emotions hinder your way of thinking. Trust me, you will not like its results. Been there done that. And in the end, guilt eat me away. And as a friendly advice, I suggest you go make up with that person and don’t go near social media sites unless you make amends.

AND LASTLY, TIP # 03: KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Now, if you want to post statuses composing of curse words, revealing and inappropriate images of yourself or your friends and even sharing unsightly articles it is ALL UP TO YOU. Just know that the perception of the people around you might change and the only thing that you can do about it is to be civilized and don’t draw attention to yourself in the social media. Well, if you want to gain recognition, do it in a more conventional and approved way. Like posting videos of talents and such. Let us not degrade ourselves to a lower level.

OVERVIEW: Millennial's Responsibility

As a millennial myself, I can say that a lot of today's youth has no sense of responsibility when it comes to the usage of social media. It was like in their terms or mindset, the words 'THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK' is not applicable, not present.

As a concern netizen, I started this blog to remind and raise awareness to the duty that we have when it comes to internet surfing. Since we are given the freedom to willingly browse the internet, that doesn't mean that we should past the boundaries. KNOW OUR LIMITATIONS! BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS,YOUR WORDS!!
